10 Thanksgiving Fire Safety Tips

We have many reasons to be thankful so we hope you follow these important safety tips this week.  Did you know Thanksgiving day is the peak for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, and the day before Thanksgiving?  And did you know U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,570 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving day last year?  What can you do to make your home safe from fire accidents this week?

Here are 10 practical Thanksgiving fire safety tips for you:

1. Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. Never leave your food during frying, on stove/oven.

2. Set a timer as a reminder to check the cooking process.

3. Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.

4. Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids… the steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.

5. Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.

6. Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.

7. Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.

8. Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.

9. Make sure your smoke alarms are working.  Test them by pushing the test button.

10. Never deep fry your turkey indoors.
