The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays.
It’s a time to celebrate America’s independence, spend time with family and friends, fire up the grill, head to the beach, and enjoy spectacular fireworks displays.
As we celebrate the freedoms that generations of Americans have fought to preserve, let’s also remember that one accident can change a family’s life forever. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your loved ones safe.
At Ed Cantu Insurance Agency & Financial Services, we’ve spent more than 41 years helping Texas families protect what matters most. While we hope you never experience a loss, we also believe prevention is the best protection.
Here are a few important Fourth of July safety reminders.
Fireworks Safety Tips
Fireworks are responsible for thousands of emergency room visits and hundreds of fires across the United States every year. The safest way to enjoy them is by attending a professional fireworks show.
If you choose to use consumer fireworks where they are legal:
• Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
• Carefully read and follow all package directions.
• Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
• Wear eye protection.
• Light only one firework at a time.
• Never relight a firework that doesn’t ignite.
• Never point fireworks toward people, pets, vehicles, homes, or dry grass.
• Store fireworks in a cool, dry location away from children.
Local Reminder: Personal fireworks are prohibited within Corpus Christi city limits and many surrounding cities. Always check local ordinances before purchasing or using fireworks.
Backyard Grilling Safety
Nothing says summer like hamburgers and barbecue.
Unfortunately, grilling accidents cause thousands of fires every year.
Before lighting your grill:
• Never leave a grill unattended.
• Keep grills outdoors and away from your home.
• Stay at least 10 feet away from siding, fences, decks, and tree branches.
• Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
• Use long-handled grilling utensils.
• Never add lighter fluid to already burning charcoal.
• Regularly inspect propane hoses for leaks.
• Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
A few minutes of caution can prevent a devastating house fire.
Texas Beach Safety
Many Coastal Bend families will spend the holiday at North Padre Island, Mustang Island, Port Aransas, or one of our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches.
Enjoy the water safely by remembering to:
• Swim near lifeguards whenever possible.
• Never swim alone.
• Never swim after drinking alcohol.
• Watch children constantly—even in shallow water.
• Wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets while boating.
• Pay attention to beach warning flags and weather alerts.
Know How to Escape a Rip Current
Rip currents are among the leading causes of beach rescues along the Texas Gulf Coast.
If caught in one:
• Stay calm.
• Don’t fight the current.
• Swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the current.
• Then swim diagonally back toward shore.
• If you become tired, float and wave for help.
Never swim near jetties or piers where rip currents commonly form.
Prevent Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
South Texas summers are beautiful—but they can also be dangerous.
Protect yourself by:
• Drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
• Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Applying SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly.
• Wearing sunglasses with UV protection.
• Taking breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
• Avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
Signs of Heat Stroke
Call 911 immediately if someone experiences:
• Confusion
• Loss of consciousness
• Hot, dry skin
• Rapid heartbeat
• Rapid breathing
Move them into shade and begin cooling them with cool water while waiting for emergency responders.
Boating Safety
If your Fourth of July plans include the Laguna Madre, Corpus Christi Bay, Baffin Bay, or offshore waters:
• Everyone should have access to a properly fitted life jacket.
• Designate a sober boat operator.
• Check the weather forecast before leaving the dock.
• File a float plan with someone on shore.
• Carry emergency communication equipment.
Many boating accidents are completely preventable.
Driving Safety
The Fourth of July is consistently one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
Help keep our roads safe:
• Never drink and drive.
• Eliminate distractions while driving.
• Slow down in neighborhoods where children may be playing.
• Buckle every passenger.
• Allow extra travel time to avoid rushing.
One safe decision could save a life.
Be Prepared Before an Emergency Happens
One of the best free resources available is the American Red Cross First Aid App, available for both Apple and Android devices. Having emergency information available on your phone can make a real difference when every second counts.
Celebrating the American Spirit
The Fourth of July is much more than fireworks.
It is a celebration of freedom, opportunity, and the countless men and women who have defended our country for nearly 250 years.
As we gather with family and friends, let’s remember how blessed we are to live in the United States of America. Take a moment to appreciate our freedoms, fly the American flag proudly, and thank a veteran or active-duty service member for their sacrifice.
From my family to yours, I wish you a safe, joyful, and memorable Independence Day.
May God continue to bless your family, the great State of Texas, and the United States of America.
Happy Fourth of July!
