Understanding Your Home Insurance Deductible Before You Have a Claim

Could You Afford to Pay $8,000, $12,000, or Even $20,000 Out of Pocket After a Storm?

Most Texas homeowners know how much they pay for their home insurance. But here’s a question that may be far more important:

Do you know how much you’ll have to pay before your insurance company pays for a covered claim?

That amount is called your deductible, and misunderstanding it could leave you facing a financial surprise at the worst possible time.

At Ed Cantu Insurance Agency, we’ve been helping Texas homeowners understand their insurance protection since 1985. One of the most important things we encourage every homeowner to review is the deductible—not just the premium.

Your Home Insurance Deductible: What Does It Really Mean?

A deductible is the amount you’re responsible for on a covered insurance claim before your insurance company pays its portion.

For example, suppose your home suffers $25,000 in covered damage from a storm and your policy has a $2,500 deductible.

You would be responsible for the first $2,500, and your insurance company would generally pay the remaining $22,500, subject to your policy’s coverage terms and limits.

Sounds simple, right?

Here’s where many Texas homeowners get caught off guard.

A 2% Deductible Does NOT Mean 2% of Your Claim!

Many Texas home insurance policies have percentage-based deductibles, especially for windstorm and hail damage.

And that percentage is calculated using your home’s insured dwelling amount—not the amount of damage.

Let’s say your home is insured for $400,000.

Deductible Your Responsibility
1% $4,000
2% $8,000
3% $12,000
5% $20,000

That’s right. A 5% deductible on a $400,000 insured home could mean $20,000 out of your pocket before insurance pays anything toward a covered loss.

Imagine discovering that after a hurricane damages your roof.

The time to understand your deductible is before the storm—not after the claim.

You May Have More Than One Deductible

Texas homeowners may have different deductibles depending on what caused the damage.

Homeowners Insurance Deductible: Often applies to covered losses such as fire or certain types of accidental damage.

Windstorm and Hail Deductible: May apply to covered damage caused by strong winds, hail, or other wind-related events.

Tropical Cyclone: Some policies have a separate deductible triggered by tropical wind conditions, as defined in the policy.

Flood Insurance Deductible: Flood damage is generally not covered by standard homeowners insurance. Separate flood insurance typically has its own deductible, and building and contents coverage may have separate deductibles.

For homeowners in Corpus Christi, Padre Island, Port Aransas, Rockport, and throughout the Texas Coastal Bend, understanding these differences is especially important.

Depending on your property and insurance arrangements, your windstorm coverage may also be provided through a separate policy, including the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA).

Never assume that one deductible applies to every type of loss.

The Cheapest Home Insurance Quote Could Cost You More

Everyone wants to save money on home insurance. We understand that. But here’s something worth considering:

What good is saving $300 a year if it means taking on thousands of dollars more in deductible exposure?

A lower insurance premium may come with a higher deductible.

That isn’t necessarily a bad decision. Some homeowners have the financial resources to comfortably absorb a larger deductible.

Others don’t.

The key is making an informed choice.

When comparing a home insurance quote, don’t look at the annual premium alone. Look at the deductible, the coverage limits, the exclusions, and what you’ll actually be responsible for if a claim occurs.

The best insurance value isn’t necessarily the lowest price. It’s the protection that fits your needs and your financial comfort level.

When Was the Last Time Someone Explained Your Deductibles?

If you can’t answer that question confidently, perhaps it’s time for a second opinion.

At Ed Cantu Insurance Agency, we believe homeowners deserve to understand what they’re buying.

We’ll help you review your homeowners insurance, windstorm insurance, and flood insurance options, explain your deductible choices, and help you determine whether your current protection still makes sense.

You may discover opportunities to save money. More importantly, you may discover something about your coverage that deserves attention before a claim occurs.
