\nIt\u2019s a time to celebrate America\u2019s independence, spend time with family and friends, fire up the grill, head to the beach, and enjoy spectacular fireworks displays.
\nAs we celebrate the freedoms that generations of Americans have fought to preserve, let\u2019s also remember that one accident can change a family\u2019s life forever. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your loved ones safe.

\nFireworks are responsible for thousands of emergency room visits and hundreds of fires across the United States every year. The safest way to enjoy them is by attending a professional fireworks show.
\nIf you choose to use consumer fireworks where they are legal:
\n\u2022 Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
\n\u2022 Carefully read and follow all package directions.
\n\u2022 Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
\n\u2022 Wear eye protection.
\n\u2022 Light only one firework at a time.
\n\u2022 Never relight a firework that doesn\u2019t ignite.
\n\u2022 Never point fireworks toward people, pets, vehicles, homes, or dry grass.
\n\u2022 Store fireworks in a cool, dry location away from children.
\nLocal Reminder: Personal fireworks are prohibited within Corpus Christi city limits and many surrounding cities. Always check local ordinances before purchasing or using fireworks.<\/p>\n
\nNothing says summer like hamburgers and barbecue.
\nUnfortunately, grilling accidents cause thousands of fires every year.
\nBefore lighting your grill:
\n\u2022 Never leave a grill unattended.
\n\u2022 Keep grills outdoors and away from your home.
\n\u2022 Stay at least 10 feet away from siding, fences, decks, and tree branches.
\n\u2022 Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
\n\u2022 Use long-handled grilling utensils.
\n\u2022 Never add lighter fluid to already burning charcoal.
\n\u2022 Regularly inspect propane hoses for leaks.
\n\u2022 Follow the manufacturer\u2019s operating instructions.
\nA few minutes of caution can prevent a devastating house fire.<\/p>\n
\nMany Coastal Bend families will spend the holiday at North Padre Island, Mustang Island, Port Aransas, or one of our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches.
\nEnjoy the water safely by remembering to:
\n\u2022 Swim near lifeguards whenever possible.
\n\u2022 Never swim alone.
\n\u2022 Never swim after drinking alcohol.
\n\u2022 Watch children constantly\u2014even in shallow water.
\n\u2022 Wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets while boating.
\n\u2022 Pay attention to beach warning flags and weather alerts.
\nKnow How to Escape a Rip Current
\nRip currents are among the leading causes of beach rescues along the Texas Gulf Coast.
\nIf caught in one:
\n\u2022 Stay calm.
\n\u2022 Don\u2019t fight the current.
\n\u2022 Swim parallel to the shoreline until you\u2019re out of the current.
\n\u2022 Then swim diagonally back toward shore.
\n\u2022 If you become tired, float and wave for help.
\nNever swim near jetties or piers where rip currents commonly form.<\/p>\n
\nSouth Texas summers are beautiful\u2014but they can also be dangerous.
\nProtect yourself by:
\n\u2022 Drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
\n\u2022 Wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.
\n\u2022 Applying SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly.
\n\u2022 Wearing sunglasses with UV protection.
\n\u2022 Taking breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
\n\u2022 Avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
\nSigns of Heat Stroke
\nCall 911 immediately if someone experiences:
\n\u2022 Confusion
\n\u2022 Loss of consciousness
\n\u2022 Hot, dry skin
\n\u2022 Rapid heartbeat
\n\u2022 Rapid breathing
\nMove them into shade and begin cooling them with cool water while waiting for emergency responders.<\/p>\n
\nIf your Fourth of July plans include the Laguna Madre, Corpus Christi Bay, Baffin Bay, or offshore waters:
\n\u2022 Everyone should have access to a properly fitted life jacket.
\n\u2022 Designate a sober boat operator.
\n\u2022 Check the weather forecast before leaving the dock.
\n\u2022 File a float plan with someone on shore.
\n\u2022 Carry emergency communication equipment.
\nMany boating accidents are completely preventable.<\/p>\n
\nThe Fourth of July is consistently one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
\nHelp keep our roads safe:
\n\u2022 Never drink and drive.
\n\u2022 Eliminate distractions while driving.
\n\u2022 Slow down in neighborhoods where children may be playing.
\n\u2022 Buckle every passenger.
\n\u2022 Allow extra travel time to avoid rushing.
\nOne safe decision could save a life.<\/p>\n
\nOne of the best free resources available is the American Red Cross First Aid App, available for both Apple and Android devices. Having emergency information available on your phone can make a real difference when every second counts.<\/p>\n
\nThe Fourth of July is much more than fireworks.
\nIt is a celebration of freedom, opportunity, and the countless men and women who have defended our country for nearly 250 years.
\nAs we gather with family and friends, let\u2019s remember how blessed we are to live in the United States of America. Take a moment to appreciate our freedoms, fly the American flag proudly, and thank a veteran or active-duty service member for their sacrifice.
